Dickson's electric

His first start at The Valley proved to be eventful for former Erith & Belvedere striker, Chris Dickson.

On the one hand, he left the pitch shortly before the final whistle to a standing ovation from the Valley faithful following an electric performance that had home fans on the edge of their seats.

But that didn't permit the striker to escape some strong criticism midway through the second period from coach Mark Kinsella, who clearly wasn't happy with a piece of showboating.

"I've got a few tricks in my locker, and obviously I pulled one out,” laughed Chris after the final whistle.

"I was, like, 'well, it got there', but he was, like, 'I don't care. Look, we're sitting bottom of the league, we haven't got time for that'. And I was, like, 'cool, cool, cool' - I'm not going to argue with Mark Kinsella!”

That incident apart, Dickson's display on his first senior start in SE7 after a 23-month wait was nothing but positive.

After signing from non-League Dulwich Hamlet in March 2007, the forward was initially unable to play for the remainder of the season because he moved outside the transfer window.

He had subsequently been restricted to substitute appearances as other striking partnerships, and lone frontmen, were preferred - until his first start at Turf Moor last month.

So after straining to start at The Valley, how did it feel to walk off the pitch to the applause of the Addicks supporters?

"It felt good,” he said. "Obviously, it would have felt better if I'd scored as well, but that'll come, definitely. "I knew I would start eventually, and when I got the nod during the week, I said 'yeah, I've got to put on a show,' so hopefully everyone was entertained.”

Although he didn't find the net, Dickson produced an effervescent performance alongside loan recruit Tresor Kandol that fully occupied the Pilgrims defence.

Argyle goalkeeper Romain Larrieu produced two fine stops, one in each half, to deny the forward, and one run down the right flank from his own half, that ended in another good save, will live long in fans' memories.

"It took me 10 minutes to recover after that,” joked Chris. "I just nicked it off, I think, Simon Walton, and obviously just kept on going.

"I saw defender after defender coming, so I thought 'keep on going' - I think I should have taken a swing with my left foot in the end, but obviously the keeper parried it. But like I said, the goals will come - definitely.” He added: "Me and Tresor have clicked automatically it feels like, and obviously I just want us both to start banging in some goals.”

With Deon Burton having collected a fifth booking of the season after entering the pitch as a late substitute in place of Dickson, ruling him out of the trip to Barnsley on Saturday as he serves a one-game suspension, the duo are likely to again start up front at Oakwell.

And although he handed in a transfer request before Christmas, when he was frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities, Dickson insisted he remained committed to the Addicks - and could soon withdraw his request. "I did put in a transfer request - I obviously just felt like I wasn't getting the rub of the green with regards to playing, but I'm happy here,” Chris explained.

"I'm playing football, I'm enjoying playing football, and obviously I just want to get us up the table and make sure we stay in the Championship for next year. He added: "I'm still transfer-listed, but a withdrawal is imminent. Obviously, I'm playing, and like I said, I'm enjoying it, so obviously a withdrawal's round the corner, definitely.”

On Charlton's survival bid, Dickson is sure that the club has enough quality to escape danger.

”We're seven points away now,” he said. "If we win all our home games, or win the majority of our home games, and hopefully the rest of the results go our way, and we'll be out of there.

"I can't see this club being relegated - this club's too big to go down. At the end of the day, there's too much quality there for us to go down, and obviously we just need to keep working hard and getting the results.

"We could have scored three, four, five, against Plymouth, so we can definitely climb out of this relegation zone.”

From last week.......

Dickson and Deon catch the eye

Phil Parkinson described Sunday night's win against Wexford Youths as a step forward.

The Addicks manager saw a first-half penalty from Deon Burton and two clinical finishes from Chris Dickson after the break complete a 3-0 success at Ferrycarrig Park in the first match of the week-long trip to Ireland.

"Chris scored two goals, which was good for him, and Deon got the other from a penalty," said Parkinson.

Dickson's double certainly caught the eye of his manager after the break, and Parkinson was delighted with the substitute's decisive second-half contribution, as well as the efforts of McLeod in the opening period.

"Dicko scored two very good goals," said Phil. "For the first he finished a cross from Nicky Bailey well, and then for the second he was put through and scored with a terrific right-footed finish.

"I said this a lot last year, if Chris Dickson had came into the team and scored within the first couple of games, then he would have scored more.

"Strikers thrive on goals and I'm hoping that will be a real boost for Dicko's confidence; you could certainly see it when he scored. His game was good and he is always a threat."

Agreed, in view of our continued support for him, that would be a very nice gesture.

A pair of 'comps' in the Charlton end at The Den for From the Board and I would be very much appreciated. :)

:(

Charlton boss Phil Parkinson confirmed today that Addicks striker Chris Dickson had joined fellow League One side Bristol Rovers on a three-month loan. Dickson, who has two international caps for Ghana, will stay with the Pirates until just before Christmas, although Charlton do have the option of recalling the forward after 28 days. Dulwich-born Dickson, who had also been the subject of strong interest from Gillingham, could now go straight into the Rovers squad for Saturday's fixture with Brentford at Griffin Park. "Chris has gone on loan for three months with a call-back clause after 28 days in case we get an injury," said Parkinson. "Gillingham hadn't called since transfer deadline day but Bristol Rovers and another League One club got in touch with us, and Rovers appealed to Chris."

Dicko made his first appearance today since returning to The Valley from his loan at Bristol Rovers. He came on for the last ten minutes and played very well as Charlton nicked a late, late 2-2 draw against Swindon Town; not a bad result considering Charlton had only nine men for the last 50 minutes of the game! The other former Dere in the Charlton side, Akpo Sodje, played superbly on his own up front and was easily man of the match.

As I was reminded at yesterday's game, Charlton keeper Rob Elliot, who played outstandingly in the above match and an is almost an ever present for Charlton this season, is another ex-Dere in the Charlton ranks. So I make it that the three best players in the nine man Charlton side all happened to be ex-Deres.
